Test day

Your FAA written test day

What to have booked, what to carry through the door, and what the piece of paper you walk out with actually means for the checkride ahead.

Practise against the ACS knowledge areas before you book.

From booking to the printed report

Four things stand between you and a result, and none of them are a surprise.

Book with PSI using your FTN

You need the FAA Tracking Number your IACRA registration issued. Check that the name on your PSI account matches IACRA and your photo ID before you pay for a slot.

Get your instructor's endorsement

14 CFR 61.35(a)(1) requires an endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying you are prepared for the test. It is a paper document you hand over at the test center — it is never filed anywhere.

Turn up with ID, endorsement and the fee

Government photo ID with your name, signature and photo, the endorsement, and payment — budget around $175 per attempt. Test centers publish their own rules on calculators and scratch material; read them before you go.

Leave with your test report

You score immediately, and the center prints your Airman Knowledge Test Report on the spot. It shows your score, the date, when the result expires, and a code for every subject area you missed.

The report is the start of the next phase

Most students file it away. Your examiner will not.

A passing score does not close the subject. The examiner is required to revisit the areas your report flags, and your instructor has to be willing to endorse that you have since covered them. That is a much easier conversation when someone has been tracking those exact areas since the day of the test.

AviaSkill takes the codes off your report, builds practice around exactly those subjects from questions written to FAA standards, and shows your instructor the movement. The checkride paperwork side is covered in what your examiner checks before a checkride.
